Local Elementary School Student Helps Save 500 Gallons of Water per Day
After participating in West Basin Municipal Water District's Water Recycling Facility Tour, Abdul Rahman from Lincoln Elementary School in Torrance received a Water Star Conservation Kit to extend water conservation skills into their home. Little did he know he will be the winner of fun water-related prizes for participating in West Basin's conservation efforts.
As part of their educational outreach efforts, West Basin offers a wide array of free water education programs for local students including field trips to their Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility in El Segundo for students from 3rd to 12th grade.
These field trips focus on recycled water technology and recycled water use in the community. After participating in West Basin’s Water Recycling Facility School Tour, all visiting students receive a Water Star Conservation Kit .
The kit activity booklet includes puzzles, mazes, and games to learn more about our precious water supply, and directions on how to use the shower timer, leak detection tablets and other water saving devices to reduce their home water bill.
Students who complete the booklet then submit their water saving calculations to West Basin and are entered into an opportunity drawing.
On February 1, 2017, Abdul Rahman, a fifth grade student attending Lincoln Elementary school in Torrance, won his own set of nifty Giant Microbe bacteria dolls that were used on the West Basin water Recycling Facility tour to demonstrate the water treatment process.
His teacher, Jennifer Hutchings, encouraged all her students to use their Water Star Conservation Kits and submit their water saving calculations. As a class, together they are saving over 500 gallons of drinking water per day…enough water to fill a small fire truck!
